Not all destinations are equal when you're between 15 and 25. Some cities have a particular energy, affordable accommodation, varied activities, and above all a community of young travelers ready to mix. For this selection, we crossed four criteria: youthful energy, accessible budget, richness of activities, and ease of socializing. Here is our top 5, with everything you need to know before you go.
1. Lisbon, Portugal — young Europeans' favorite
Lisbon has everything you're looking for: generous sunshine from May to October, intense culture, affordable street food, and lively evenings in Bairro Alto and Alfama. Its youth hostels are among the best and cheapest in Europe — expect between €15 and €25 per night in a dorm. Public transport is efficient and economical. On the activities front, the Museu do Azulejo, São Jorge Castle, Belém's pastéis de nata, and rides on tram 28 are unmissable. In the evenings, the fado music scene in cobbled alleyways creates a unique atmosphere. Lisbon is also a very welcoming city for solo travelers or small groups.
2. Barcelona, Spain — maximum energy
Barcelona needs no introduction. Beaches accessible by metro from the city center, surreal Gaudí architecture, the Sagrada Família, La Boqueria market, Park Güell, and an unmatched nightlife in El Born and El Raval. Average budget: €50-80/day all-in at a hostel. Ideal for daytime activities with your parents and evening encounters with other young travelers — Barcelona hostels regularly organize group outings. Barceloneta Beach makes socializing easy during the day. Note: the city is very crowded in July-August, so prefer June or September to avoid the crowds.
3. Amsterdam, Netherlands — culture and freedom
Amsterdam is often associated with adults, but it's also a fantastic city for 15-25 year olds. The museums are among the most engaging in Europe: the Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House, the Stedelijk (contemporary art), and the Van Gogh Museum are all well worth the visit. The canals are beautiful and the cycling culture makes it a unique city to explore at your own pace. The Jordaan and Negen Straatjes neighborhoods offer a village feel within a big city. Budget-wise, it's more expensive than Lisbon or Prague (€60-90/day), but centrally located hostels are well-situated. The city is very international — making friends with travelers from all over the world is particularly easy there.
4. Prague, Czech Republic — the unmissable affordable option
Prague is one of the most photographed cities in Europe and one of the cheapest. Preserved baroque architecture, Prague Castle dominating the city, Charles Bridge with its statues, medieval old town — the visual level is consistently stunning. For family vacations on a controlled budget, it's the perfect spot: expect €30-45/day all-in. Youth hostels are excellent and concentrated in the center. In summer, the banks of the Vltava and parks fill up with young locals and travelers. The city is also an ideal hub for day trips by bus or train to Vienna, Bratislava, or Budapest.
5. Malta — sun, diving, and history
Less well-known than the other four, Malta is nevertheless a gem for young travelers. This small Mediterranean island (you can drive across it in 45 minutes) offers crystal-clear waters, megalithic ruins among the oldest in the world, and a nightlife concentrated in Paceville that is particularly active. Ideal for fans of snorkeling, swimming, and historical discovery. English is spoken everywhere (former British colony), which makes it easy to meet young people from around the world. Many English language centers attract thousands of young Europeans every summer to learn English — international atmosphere guaranteed.
How to choose based on your profile
If you want a city with lots of other young travelers and a lively atmosphere, Barcelona or Lisbon are the best options. If you prefer a more cultural and calm destination, Amsterdam or Prague will suit you better. Malta is ideal if you want to combine sea, history, and social encounters in a more intimate setting. Whatever your choice, install HollyFriends before you leave to spot other young people in your accommodation as soon as you arrive — it's the fastest way not to be left facing a city map alone.
